According to statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), a non-violent crime is reported around every three seconds in the United States. Meanwhile, violent crimes are reported around every 22 seconds. Crimes are committed all over the country on a daily basis, including in the state of Texas. Certain crimes take place more frequently than others. There are a variety of criminal cases heard each and every day as a result. It’s important to note that these five offenses are just a few of the types of criminal cases that exist.

Theft and Larceny

Theft and larceny is the most common crime in the country and occurs far more than any other. In general, there are over 7 million larceny-theft incidents reported every year. This makes the crime close to 60 percent the most reported crime in the country. Larceny refers to a person taking someone else’s property without permission or authority and deliberately depriving the owner of that property. Theft is the act of stealing something.

Burglary

Burglary is highly common as well. It is a crime that occurs when a person gains unlawful entry into someone else’s home with the intention of stealing property or money within that dwelling. There are approximately 2 million burglary crimes reported on an annual basis, making up around 18 percent of all reported crimes.

Motor Vehicle Theft

Car theft is a very common crime in Texas and everywhere else in the country. Each year, there are over 1 million vehicles stolen. This crime accounts for over 10 percent of all crimes that are reported every year. This includes the act of actually stealing a vehicle with the intent of selling it and carjacking.

Aggravated Assault

Aggravated assault is a violent crime that is unfortunately very common. The crime is committed when a person attacks another with the intention of gravely injuring them. The crime may or may not involve the use of a weapon. Regardless of whether a weapon is involved, aggravated assault makes up 7 percent of all the crimes that are reported each year.

Robbery

Robbery is a crime that is committed by stealing property from another person. However, it is also a violent crime because it involves the use of a weapon. In order to commit this crime, a person would have to hold someone up in a place of business or somewhere else while demanding money or something else worth value. Three percent of all crimes are robberies and there are around a half-million of them committed each year.
